GREAT GRAPES
The Empordà may be Spanin's oldest winemaking region,but it is definitely not the best known.Yet over the past few years, a select number of wines coming from vineyard just inland from the Costa Brava have caught the attetion of international experts-
Hadder-Williams said a major factor in the area's growing reputation is the decision by some vineyards to make their own wine. Now Diego and Nuria Soto of Mas Estela are growing organic grapes and producing a range of read an white wines as well as the area's famous dessert wine, Garnatxa d'Empordà.
Laura Montero, technical director of the vineyard which is near Calonge in Baix Empordà, said that although still relatively inknown abroad the area affered plenty of possibilities. David Rovira, Perelada's export director, said that their wines are sold in 37 countries and that sales are growing by 20 percend annually.He addet that Perelada has boasted its profile through various cultural activities.
However they go about it, it would appear that the wire industry in Empordà is doing a good job at grabbing the attention of wine lovers around the world!
